Leucine, phenylalanine and glutamic acid are the predominant amino acids in all size groups and leucine (18.67 g 100 g-1 protein) and glutamic acid (10.55 g 100 g-1 protein) contents were significantly high in medium size fishes. The protein content (19.55%) was found to be the highest in medium size fishes. Proximate analysis showed that the fish is rich in protein and low in fat. In the present study, we report the proximate composition, amino acid, fatty acid and mineral composition of different size groups of R.

It enjoys high consumer preference as a valuable food fish due to its muscle texture, good taste and lesser intramuscular spines however, basic nutritional information on the species is not available. The freshwater catfish Rita rita (Hamilton, 1822) (Family: Bagridae) inhabits the tropical rivers and estuaries and contributes to the capture fisheries production in the Indian subcontinent. Inhibition activity of MEJS on lipid oxidation ranged between 28% and 38% at concentrations of 50-800 mg/L during 144 h of storage. The results showed that MEJS has stronger inhibition activity than Grape Seed Extract (GSE) but lower than BHA (p < 0.05) according to conjugated dienes (CD), peroxide values (PoV), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). The aim of the research was to evaluate the effect of methanolic extract of Java Plum seed (MEJS) on lipid oxidation of fish oil from striped catfish (Pangasius hypothalamus) in oil-in-water emulsions as a food model at 35☒☌ during 144 h of storage. Methanolic extract of Java plum seed was a source of strong antioxidant polyphenols against DPPH as well as strong Ferric (Fe³⁺) reducing agent. However, PUFAs are susceptible to oxidative deterioration. Relatively higher amounts of n-9 fatty acids were also observed indicating deficiency of dietary essential fatty acids (EFA).įish oil is considered as a great nutritional importance due to a high content of essential n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as linolenic acid, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Health beneficial n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) like eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were found in the range of 0.19 to 0.45% and 0.56 to 2.02% respectively. A total of 27 fatty acids were unveiled by fatty acid profiling, of which saturated fatty acids were the major contributors with a higher concentration of 66.45% in belly portion.

The protein content was higher (18.97%) in caudal region, whereas ash (1.19%) and moisture (78.18%) contents were higher in dorsal portion. The proximate composition revealed significant (p <= 0.05) variation in total fat with belly portion having 22.32% compared to 0.41 and 2.54% in dorsal and caudal portions respectively. The present study compared proximate composition and fatty acid profiles of three different body portions viz., dorsal, caudal and belly regions, in cultured Pangasianodon hypophthalmus procured from farms in Andhra Pradesh.
